June 21 of 1994 we arrived for our last trip in the white Westfalia. This was a very hot summer - we spent a lot of time driving along autobahns with windows down (no a/c) & seeking out campings with swimming!
We started off by getting over jetlag in Brussels, then headed over to Bacharach.Next to Frankfurt for lunch of schweinshaxe, then over to Bamberg to drop into Schlenkerla for supper. Bought tickets to Kantner's Jefferson Starship who were supposed to play a Woodstock Fest in the area. Next Nurnberg to the Czech border, where , due to some dispute with Canada, they were demanding $75. each for visas - we turned around & left. Next we found a small place called Bodenwohr, with a lake & great wooded walks - stayed a few days, drinking bier with fellow German campers. Then Regensburg to dine on the wurst in the historic wurst haus next to the bridge, then Kelheim to Schneiders, where we ate, drank & bought a bunch of swag from the gift shop. Killing time waiting for Deutsche Woodstock, we looped around Munchen to Hitler's Eagle's Nest. Decided to deek into Salzburg, Austria on a Sun. morn - no Austrian Schillings, so we left after a few hours, heading back to the Bamberg area for Jefferson Starship - only to find they had cancelled, so we got a refund & did a tour of the Frankische Schweiz instead.
Next we drove the autobahn by Wurzberg, sleeping & showering in a tankstelle & buying new tires (polizei in Bamberg ordered this :-)
Heading over to the Neckartal, we vegged several days in the camping in Ebersbach, then headed east, visiting Rietburg Castle (took a cablecar) & Bewartstein castle. Looping thru Trier to Cochem we went back to Koln for a VW service & spent a few more days at Bacharach before returning to Amsterdam via Den Haag, where we stayed at a large camping amongst the dunes overlooking the North Sea.
Precious few pics taken on this trip, but here's what we have! :
