2022 Summer Germany
A year of chaos at Canadian and European airports that radically affected our plans!
Frank ended up going solo again - we cancelled Taylor & Odin's flight due to excessive delays, cancellations etc. at airports - we felt it would put Odin in too much of a risky situation to subject him to a flight under such circumstances.
Then getting the annual inspection on the Hymer reflected the same worker shortages as obtained at the airport. Needed new tires and a new exhaust. Turned out the exhaust, not being stock Fiat needed to be custom made - which is what we ended up doing. That necessitated me returning to the Netherlands mid trip, so I ended up doing 2 smaller loops in Germany rather than the planned loop of Kassel - Venezia - Avignon.
Started with a trip to Kassel for Documenta (the most unimpressive Documenta we have attended). Then looped back to hang out in Bacharach, with a spot right on the Rhein. The German government had free nationwide trains & bussed for €9, so I did some radiating to trips to Bingen, Rudesheim, Eltville and Koblenz.
After a return to NL, I went back and visited a number of towns in Germany that previously had been drive-bys, including Hildesheim,Gottingen, Gotha, Cobourg, revisiting Bamberg, then following the Main through Kitzingen, Ochsenfurt, Wertheim and Miltenberg, before heading back through Bacharach and Köln.
Rather than do my usual Google Maps/Pics/Text layout, this year I'll be lazy - click on the button below to see the trip on Polarsteps:
