Italy 1997

Note: The pics are all from video - and unfortunately we took none in key locations like Rome, Siena, Firenze,Paestum.

 

 

In September of 1997 we shipped our blue Westfalia over, picking it up in Rotterdam again. 

We then headed across Germany to Kassel for Documenta (least interesting iteration), then down to Munchen for a brief stop at Oktoberfest...

...before transiting Austria to enter Italy via the Brenner pass.We climbed to the then-ruin of Castello Salorno, then we headed east through Cortina to Venezia, where we stayed at the Camping Fusina, right next to a ship channel.

 

 

 

 

We then passed through the ruins of Carsulae before landing in  Roma (no pics), where we stayed at the camping Tiber & trained it in (after driving in endless circles right into the centrum!).

After Rome, we headed south to Pompeii & Sorrento, looping around the Amalfi Coast to Paestum ...

 

...before heading back through Tivoli ...

 

...toTuscany - Civita, Orvieto, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, Siena (no pics), Firenze(no pics) before heading to  Bologna & Verona(no pics).

 

 

 

On the way back we stopped in Bamberg for Schlenkerla & in Koln, where we encountered a Mallorcan fest with music, bonfires & devils.

Then we went to Beersel & took a Tour de Gueuze - a bus tour of half a dozen lambic breweries in the Payottenland.
